How IPL Has Changed in the New Decade?

IPL changes in the new decade

Indian Premier League is responsible to revolutionize Indian cricket and now the stage has come that BCCI and the selection committee are dependent on the tournament to select the best players from the bunch that plays in every season. Nobody in 2008 ever imagined that IPL is going to be the backbone of the country’s cricket in such a way. It has been 15 years, and IPL has constantly supported making Indian cricket the best version of itself.

The young generation who is struggling to make an impact in domestic cricket is always hopeful to be part of the tournament which gets the attention of the international media. With a hope to make it big, there is a huge chunk of young players and uncapped players register themselves for the auction and very few are chosen to become a part of the different franchises.

Their process is very difficult and it requires a higher level of focus and dedication to play the most elite cricket tournament on the planet. However, it is because of the same process, IPL witnesses the best quality of players and a higher level of entertainment for the fans.

The things which have changed since the last decade.

1) Two New Franchises

In the year 2022, BCCI and the IPL committee decided to introduce two new teams in the tournament. In the past, IPL has seen the introduction of new teams but eventually, the new franchises collapsed and the tournament was back to eight teams. With the introduction of Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans, IPL has become more exciting and there are more prospects for the players.

The decision to introduce two new franchises was taken because of the large number of quality players at the domestic level and to make IPL a much bigger platform in the world. Gujarat Titans won the IPL trophy in their debut season and established themselves as the supreme power. Lucknow Super Giants also did well in the previous tournament but their luck ran out in the playoffs.

2) Dependency on Young Uncapped Players

It has been observed recently that all the franchises have started focusing more on hiring the services of young Indian players than the international cricketers or even experienced Indian players. When a franchise signs an international player, there is always a possibility that the player might join the tournament late or might leave in the middle of the tournament because of the international schedule. Another reason for giving young players more chances is that higher fitness levels are required for the whole tournament.

With 70 league matches and a 52-day schedule, there is a higher possibility that an experienced Indian player or an international player might face injury. The step to higher the young generation of cricketers has also helped to develop Indian cricket on the international stage.

3) Total number of matches and schedule

The first season of IPL came up with 59 matches that were distributed in 45 days window from 18th April to 1st June 2008. However, with time, the schedule of IPL has increased and in the 16th season of IPL, fans are witnessing a schedule of 59 days and 74 matches in the tournament. The number of matches has increased because of the introduction of two new teams and a break during the playoffs. BCCI and the IPL committee have announced that the same schedule will be followed shortly.
