Three Indian Cricketers Who Declined Under Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy
Rohit Sharma has been a very successful captain of Team India in all formats of the game. He has a winning percentage of over 70% in both ODIs and T20Is, and he has led India to victory in several major bilateral series. He is a very calm and composed captain and can keep his team calm under pressure.
Rohit is also a very good tactician, and he can come up with plans to counter the opposition’s bowlers.
Rohit is also a very good man-manager, and he can get the best out of his players. He can create a positive and relaxed atmosphere in the dressing room, which helps his players to perform at their best.
It has been more than a year, Rohit Sharma’s captaincy has bought multiple changes to the team and because of these changes, few players are ignored by the Indian skipper.
Rohit may simply prefer other players to these players. He may feel that these other players are better suited to his style of captaincy or that they are more likely to succeed in the international arena.
There is no exact reason for the ignorance but because balance in the team is also needed, Rohit might have taken some harsh decisions to take the team towards the new challenges.
1) Shikhar Dhawan
Even after performing exceptionally well in the Indian Premier League and international cricket, Shikhar Dhawan has been completely ignored by skipper Rohit Sharma for the past year. Rohit might be considering the team’s balance when making his selection decisions. He may feel that Dhawan does not fit into the team’s balance as well as other players.
For example, Rohit may prefer to have an aggressive batsman like Ishan Kishan in the opening slot, as this will allow India to score more runs in the powerplay overs. However, whenever the question of Dhawan’s performance has been raised, he has replied to his critics with his bat with positivity.
Rohit has preferred younger players over Shikhar Dhawan as the latter has reached the age of 37 and he does not fit in the plans of team India and its skipper Rohit Sharma.
2) Yuzvendra Chahal
It is a surprise to see Chahal’s absence from Team India for a long time. Even after performing at his best in IPL and the limited over format in international cricket, Rohit has completely ignored Yuzvendra Chahal in playing XI. Chahal has traditionally been used as a wicket-taking option in the middle overs.
However, in recent times, India has been using Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav as their main wicket-taking spinners. This may have led Rohit to believe that Chahal is not needed in the team as much as he used to be. In whatever case, Rohit’s decisions are destroying the career of one of the most talented spinners from the Indian camp.
Chahal has been a bright mind in the past and his variations have helped Team India to score wins in some major fixtures in the past.
3) Bhuvneshwar Kumar
The Indian ‘Sultan of Swing’ Bhuvneshwar Kumar is away from the spotlight for almost a year. He is not in the plans of BCCI and skipper Rohit Sharma. However, if history is taken into account, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been the only consistent pacer the Indian sub-continent has ever produced.
He has the right balance of speed and swing which has become a major fear in the hearts of batsmen like Aaron Finch, Steve Smith, Jos Buttler, and many more. Kumar has even lost his contract with BCCI and Rohit’s support and now he is not expected to make a comeback to the team.
