Top 3 Contenders for ODI World Cup Trophy

Top 3 Contenders for ODI World Cup Trophy

The year 2023 will witness a new champion in the ODI format of cricket. The ODI World Cup 2023 is scheduled to take place in India during the October-November window. The dates are not finalized yet but the teams who have qualified for the tournament are now in the process to choose the best players who will be participating in the tournament. Every four years, we see ten teams who come together to claim their supremacy in one of the most thrilling formats of the game.

Even after the invention of T20 cricket, ODI cricket still holds a higher amount of respect among the players. One-day International match always tests the real talent of a player and this is because their always a possibility to lose focus during the game and end up not performing at the best. ODI format always has a window where the game can be strategized and till the time things are not in favour of the team, the pace of the game can be slowed down.

However, this doesn’t happen in the T20 format as the overs are very less and the pressure is higher. ODI format gives an opportunity for a player to enjoy the game without much pressure at some points.

The top most contenders for the trophy of the tournament.

1) New Zealand

The top spot is reserved for New Zealand as they top the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. Since 2019, Kiwis have been part of 24 ODIs and they have won 16 ODIs, gaining 175 points at a net run rate of +0.974. The runner-ups of the 2019 world have always come out as a strong team in the limited format of the game. They were also part of the first WTC final against India and lifted the trophy in the red-ball format. However, it is now time for the Kiwi squad to showcase their dominance in the 50-over format as well.

2) India

The hosts this time will be looking forward to repeating the history of the 2011 triumph. It has been more than a decade since Team India has lifted the ODI World Cup. A lot has changed in the camp of Team India in these past 12 years but one thing has remained the same, their dominance over international cricket. India produces some of the best cricketers in the world and the current squad looks in top shape.

With immense talent and a well-experienced coach, team India will be all set to regain supremacy in the ODI format. Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, team India will be on the field with a lot of new faces who have performed exceptionally well in the ODI format. The only concern for the team management is the injury of KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah. However, both are expected to be back by the time the tournament will start.

3) Australia

Australian cricket has always kept its dominance in international cricket. No matter what the format is, Australian players have come out as the best players in the world and they are always a danger in the ICC tournaments. The Aussies witnessed a dip in their performance recently in the T20 format but that has not affected their quality of cricket for the ODI format.

Having some of the best players in the world, Australia has won 4 ODI World Cups and the last time they lifted the trophy was in 2015. The 2019 campaign was disappointing but the Aussies have shown some positivity in recent times and they are expected to reach the top in the upcoming tournament.
