Cricket World Records: Unbelievable Feats
Cricket has a rich history and is one of the oldest sports in the world. For over two centuries, cricket has thrived in the entertainment business, showcasing some of the best players worldwide.
Within this rich history lie incredible records that players have achieved, making them seemingly impossible to break. Here is a list of remarkable records that are so extraordinary that they appear almost unachievable.
Captaincy at the Age of 50
Dr. William Gilbert Grace, commonly known as W.G. Grace, is an iconic figure in the history of cricket. Widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of all time, Grace had a significant impact on the sport. He captained the England cricket team at the age of 50 and led them in his final Test match as captain against Australia in 1899 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Grace’s captaincy at such an advanced age is a testament to his longevity and enduring influence on the game of cricket.
199 First-Class Centuries
Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for the most centuries in international cricket. However, when it comes to first-class cricket, nobody can surpass Jack Hobbs from England. His record of 199 first-class centuries is extraordinary and remained unbeaten for many years. Hobbs scored his first century in 1905 and continued to accumulate runs consistently throughout his career. He achieved the milestone of 199 centuries in his final innings, playing for Surrey against Somerset in 1934. He concluded his first-class career with a staggering 61,760 runs at an average of 50.70.
3-Over Century
Sir Donald Bradman, widely regarded as the greatest batsman in the history of cricket, achieved the incredible feat of scoring a century in just three overs during a tour match in 1931. However, it is important to note that this particular feat is not recognized as an official world record, as it occurred in a non-competitive match. In those three overs, Bradman scored 100 runs, hitting 13 fours and 8 sixes. It was a stunning exhibition of his batting prowess and ability to score at a remarkable rate.
International Wicket without Bowling
Virat Kohli is renowned for his batting records in international cricket. However, he holds an unbelievable record in T20 cricket. Virat Kohli became the only bowler to dismiss a batsman off the 0th delivery in T20 international cricket. The incident took place in 2011 when Team India faced England, and Kevin Pietersen was on strike. Virat Kohli bowled a wide, and Dhoni promptly stumped the English batter. Kohli’s bowling figures read 0.0-0-1-1 before he delivered a legitimate ball.
Three Double-Centuries by “The Hitman”
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is renowned for his batting skills and powerful hitting in the limited-overs format. Rohit made a significant impact early in his international career. He is the only batsman in ODI cricket history to have scored three double-centuries. In 2013, he scored his first double-century, 209 runs, against Australia. The other two double-hundreds came in 2014 and 2018 against Sri Lanka.
19 Wickets in One Match
English off-spinner Jim Laker achieved the incredible feat of taking 19 wickets in a single Test match, a record that still stands in cricket history. The match occurred at Old Trafford in Manchester. In the first innings, Laker took 9 wickets for 37 runs as Australia were bowled out for just 84 runs. In the second innings, he surpassed his remarkable performance by taking all 10 wickets for 53 runs, dismissing Australia for 205 runs. Laker’s match figures were an astounding 19 wickets for 90 runs.
