Cricket Legends from the West Indies_ Caribbean Icons _ 12 Jun

For a long time, the West Indies remained one of the most dominating teams in international cricket. With two consecutive ODI World Cups and two T20 World Cup trophies, West Indies has always come out as one of the strongest teams in the world.

However, in recent times, the Windies have struggled in international cricket and they are going through a major dip in their performance overall. All of a sudden, after the retirement of their senior players, the young generation is failing to make an impact.

West Indies has seen some of the best players in the past with the utmost quality and talent. The country already had a rich history in sports but a few legends from the country helped the West Indies to succeed in cricket as well.

In this article, we have compiled a list of cricketing legends from the West Indies who are still an inspiration for the younger generation.

1) Brian Lara

When it comes to West Indies cricket legends, Brian Lara tops the charts with his talent and achievements in international cricket. In 131 Tets, Lara scored 11953 runs at an average of 52.9 and a strike rate 60.5.

When it comes to the ODI format, Lara scored 10405 runs in 299 ODIs at an average of 40.5 and with a strike rate of 79.5. Brian Lara could dominate bowling attacks and change the course of a match single-handedly. He was not afraid to take risks, often playing attacking shots early in his innings.

2) Courtney Walsh

One of the most feared bowlers from the West Indies, Courtney Walsh, was known for his swing and accuracy in international cricket. He could generate late swing, both conventional and reverse, and also extract seam movement. This made him a potent threat in a variety of conditions. In 205 ODIs, Walsh picked up 227 wickets at an average of 30.5 and an economy of 3.83. While in Tests, Walsh picked up 519 wickets in 132 Tests at an economy of 2.53. Walsh was also renowned for his stamina and durability. He had a tireless work ethic, often bowling long spells without losing his pace or accuracy.

3) Clive Lloyd

It was because of Clive Llyod, West Indies cricket ruled the international circuit for ten years and won two World Cup trophies consecutively. Clive Lloyd was known for his flamboyant style of batting and scoring runs with the help of powerful shots.

In addition to his power-hitting, Lloyd had a sound defensive technique. He possessed solid footwork and a strong forward defense, which allowed him to handle high-quality bowling with confidence. Because of his achievements and contribution to West Indies cricket, Lloyd is still an inspirational figure for the young generation.

4) Curtly Ambrose

The most feared bowler of all time, Curtly Ambrose was known for his bouncers and pace that gave tough times to batters from across the globe. He, in partnership with Curtly Walsh, dominated international cricket for a long time. Ambrose had a unique and distinctive release point, where he released the ball from a higher trajectory compared to most other fast bowlers.

This added an extra dimension to his bowling, making it challenging for batsmen to pick the length of his deliveries. He was a formidable fast bowler with an imposing presence on the field.

5) Vivian Richards

Sir Vivian Richards was known to dominate the game from the first ball. He was a nightmare for the bowlers from every team. One of Richards’ trademark shots was his fierce straight drive. He had exceptional timing and the ability to hit the ball straight down the ground with immense power.

In 187 ODIs, Sir Richards scored 6721 runs at an average of 47.0 and a strike rate of 90.2. In the Test format, Vivian Richards scored 8540 runs at an average of 50.2 in 121 matches.
