What is the Longest Six in the IPL History?

Longest sixes in IPL history

Fans flock to stadiums during the Indian Premier League (IPL) to witness the thrilling spectacle of batsmen smashing the ball beyond the boundaries. Over the years, the IPL has evolved into a game dominated by batsmen, with heavier bats and power play restrictions contributing to the high-scoring nature of the tournament.

Cricket enthusiasts relish the exhilarating moments when players boldly venture out of their crease and unleash the ball into the stands. The IPL has witnessed a remarkable surge in the number of sixes struck, with a notable increase from 622 sixes in the inaugural edition to an impressive 1,062 sixes recorded in the thrilling 2022 edition.

Increasing number of sixes in IPL

In the 2008 edition of the IPL, Albie Morkel, a South African all-rounder representing the Chennai Super Kings, etched his name in the record books by hitting the longest six in IPL history. His colossal six spanned an impressive 125 meters and came against the Deccan Chargers.

In a remarkable display of batting prowess, Praveen Kumar, a bowler representing the Kings XI Punjab, achieved an extraordinary feat by smashing the second-longest six ever recorded in the history of the IPL. What makes this achievement even more astonishing is that the delivery came from the renowned Lasith Malinga, who is primarily recognized for his exceptional bowling skills rather than his batting abilities.

During his captaincy for the Kings XI Punjab in 2011, Adam Gilchrist, the renowned Australian cricketer, blasted a 122-meter six, securing the third spot on the longest sixes list.

In the year 2010, Robin Uthappa, a formidable player representing the Royal Challengers Bangalore, showcased his exceptional power-hitting prowess. During a match against the Mumbai Indians at the Brabourne Stadium, Uthappa left spectators in awe as he unleashed a colossal six that traveled an astonishing 120 meters, firmly establishing his reputation as a fearsome striker of the ball.

Yuvraj and Gayle power-hitting

The fifth-longest six in the history of the IPL is an honor shared by two legendary cricketers, Yuvraj Singh, and Chris Gayle. Yuvraj’s extraordinary feat was achieved against the formidable Chennai Super Kings, while Gayle accomplished his remarkable milestone during a match against the Pune Warriors. Both players displayed their immense power and precision as they unleashed mighty sixes that soared through the air, etching their names in the annals of IPL history.

In 2008, at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Ross Taylor etched his name in history by striking a 119-meter six off the bowling of Jacob Oram from the Chennai Super Kings.

Ben Cutting, an Australian batsman playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, provided a memorable victory when he smashed a 117-meter six over the stadium roof during a match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Cutting’s innings also included three fours and four additional sixes.

Gautam Gambhir, representing the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2013 IPL, displayed his power-hitting prowess by launching Sreesanth’s delivery for a massive 117-meter six. His exuberant celebration was evident as he ran down the pitch, sending the ball soaring over mid-wicket.
